Some welcome changes for dog owners that are visiting Long Beach Island this summer. There are now places where you can bring your dog - legally - without having to worry about getting a ticket for doing something illegal.
Here is a brief roundup:
Bayview Park, found along the shore of Barnegat Bay, now has a dawn to dusk dog beach. It is located on Long Beach Boulevard, just opposite the municipal building. The park is multi-use, as there is a swimming beach and other amenities. The town is therefore encouraging dogs to be kept on a leash but you are also allowed to let them run free if you want to let them swim or do something like have them chase down a frisbee or ball. You do need to have a beach tag to use the park.
Stone Harbor allows unleashed dogs on the ocean beach between 80th and 83rd street during early morning - dawn to 9 AM - and early evening hours - 6 PM to dusk. Owners must clean up after their pet.
Ocean City and Barnegat Light supposedly have dog parks, although these are not along the shoreline. If anyone has more details, you can post them in the comments so others will know where they can find these parks.
You are allowed to bring your dog to Barnegat Light State Park (and across the inlet in Island Beach State Park).
