Weston Solutions has issues a press release detailing their accomplishments in cleaning up munitions from the beaches of Surf City and Ship Bottom. They have finished early and here are some of the details of what they accomplished:
Timing: began January 20, 2009 and ended work May 1, 2009
Munitions removed: 1,915
Estimated sand sifted: 390,00 cubic yards (lots!)
Replaced: 21 walkways, 3 car crossovers, 1 handicap crossover, 56 private walkways and 8,100 feet of fencing at the back of the beach
Added: street marker signs on the beach at each walkway that is associated with a street
Other accomplishments: no lost time incidents for the duration of the project, which included and estimated 60,000 hours of work
The company was paid over 13 million dollars for their work. It seems it is a lot of money but it was a big job. It is a credit to them that they were able to complete their work numerous weeks earlier than expected. They removed a potential hazard, kept themselves safe will doing so and in replacing walkways and adding street signs increased safety beyond removing the munitions problem.
