The federal dollars delivered to the state of NJ to stimulate economic recovery have, in parg, been slated to repair the Dorland J. Henderson Memorial Bridge. $4 million has been allocated to resurface the deck, seal cracks, and rebuild the curbs.
The work was scheduled to be done from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday, July 20 through Sept. 15. Local businesses were up in arms, fearing the work on the only bridge into and off of the island would hurt their summer business. Complaints to the DOT succeeded in having the project delayed until after Labor Day.
Business owners on LBI were pleased with the decision, although a local mainland contractor that was slated to perform some of the work has now been left without a much needed summer contract.
